Hats on for Japan!

Two second grade students at JTPS, Claire Lyman and Sarah Cipriano, approached the school’s administration with an idea to help the people of Japan whose country was recently devastated by an earthquake.  Due to their desire to help, staff and students participated in “Hats on for Japan!”  Students, their families, and staff members contributed one dollar (or a donation of their choice) in order to wear a hat to school.  The money collected was donated to the National American Red Cross to support the victims of the earthquake in Japan. A donation in the amount of $826.00 was sent on behalf of John Trumbull Primary School! Thank you to all who contributed to this very important project and to Claire and Sarah for their efforts in organizing the event!

Book Fair Carnival - Your Ticket to Read!

Recently the John Trumbull Primary School’s PTO held a book fair where parents and students had the opportunity to purchase books.  In conjunction with the book fair, the school’s Family Literacy Team held an event, which included the opportunity to listen to stories read by members of the Rotary Club.  After the sharing of stories, the families shopped for a favorite book with a book coupon that was provided by the Rotary Club.  Members of the Family Resource Center collected donations in support of Scholastic’s One for Books program. This program provides an easy and effective way to unite the school community and provide more books for kids and teachers. All funds collected through One for Books are used to buy more books from the Book Fair. The books are used to supplement the school’s Literacy Bags that are shared with families.

These evening events bring family members together where the focus is to purely promote the love of reading. All of these programs have been successful in enhancing literacy with children and their families. A special thank you to the PTO, The Family Literacy Team, The Family Resource Center, the Rotary Club, and to all of the families that supported the book fair and attended the events!

JTPS Second Graders Become Non Fiction Authors!

Second grade students at John Trumbull Primary School recently completed a nonfiction unit of study.  Students explored a variety of nonfiction books and compared them to fiction. They learned about the features of nonfiction texts and had an opportunity to produce a piece of nonfiction writing. Using their skills as writers, the students produced pieces that contained many nonfiction features, such as a table of contents, diagrams, captions and a glossary.

Recently, to celebrate this accomplishment, students in Mrs. McCarthy’s class and Mrs. Longo’s class gathered to share their books.  The “All About” books that were written contained information and facts about a subject that each student was an expert about.  “All about Baseball” and “All about Dance” are two examples of book titles that were produced by these second grade experts. During the celebration, each student read their nonfiction book to a small group of classmates. At the close of the gathering, the books were placed on a shelf in the library for the entire school to enjoy.
