Who are School Psychologists?

School psychologists have specialized training in both psychology and education. They use their training and skills to team with educators, parents and other mental health professionals to ensure that every child learns in a safe, healthy and supportive environment.  Today's children face more challenges than ever before. School psychologists can provide solutions for tomorrow's problems through thoughtful and positive actions today.

Parents often ask me what they can do at home to help their son or daughter do their best in school.  Here are some easy suggestions:

Smile Read to your child every day.

SmileSpend some uninterrupted time with your child every day. Turn off the television, video games, computers and cell phones and talk to your child about their day. Ask questions that will encourage them to share their thoughts. Some parents like to play games, and some like to cook dinner together. Whatever you choose will help you build a stronger relationship with your child.

Smile Acknowledge their feelings. Listen with an open mind.

Smile Maintain consistent routines at home.

Smile Do your best to stay positive. This can be difficult at times when you are tired and its hard to be patient, but positive interaction is more effective as a motivator for children than negative interaction.
