**Are you reading a book that you would recommend to someone else? If so, please tell us all about it here. Do not forget to tell us the title, author and why you liked the book!!!
Parent / Guardian Information:
Please send in a note if you need to pick up your child early from school or if there is a change in dismissal (pick up instead of bus, someone else is picking them up, etc...).
If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday with a special treat, please let me know ahead of time. Each day we eat snack between 10:00 and 10:30am daily. All food items that enter our classroom need to be checked by our school nurse first. Please include all ingredients, labels, etc... for Mrs. Crean. Thank-you in advance, as this is for the safety of all of the students in the building.
Our January Curriculum at a Glance...
Math: We are currently working on MONEY!!!!
Language Arts: In order to be a good reader, students must use reading strategies. This year we are going to work on learning many helpful strategies that will enable your child to become a stronger and more successful reader, which include CONNECTING, PICTURING, PREDICTING, NOTICING, and FIGURING OUT. Please encourage your child to read at home and to keep a reading log. Students take part in daily in Reading Workshop which consists of small group reading, partner reading, independent reading, work work and responding. Students are held accountable for writing in complete sentences, which include the appropriate capitalization and punctuation.
Spelling: Students take a spelling pretest at the beginning of the week. We correct the pretest as a class and go over each word as well as the week's spelling pattern. Spelling homework is due on Thursday and an end of week test is given on Friday. If there is a shortened school week, the spelling schedule will be modified.
**Please see the varied weekly spelling menus for ways to help your child study spelling words in a more engaging way! Also, please take advantage of the Spelling City free online website, where your children can practice their spelling words in a fun interactive way! (Search "Mrs. Ahlgren" on the Spelling City website). You can access my spelling word lists by searching with my name.
Homework:
Homework is an extension of the learning that your children are doing at school. Homework will normally be given on Mondays through Thursday. Homework is usually not given on the weekend, unless there is a special project assigned. I firmly believe that the weekend is a time for you to spend quality time together as a family.
Please sign your child's agenda every night as this counts as a homework assignment. Agendas are checked first thing in the morning by the V.I.P. (Very Important Person) as students come in for the day.
Missing School:
If your child is sick, please keep them home until their fever has broken and they are feeling better. GERMS SPREAD FAST!!!! Each student's group will keep track of their missing work and will organize it for them.
Missing work will be either completed in class (when there is time) and/or may be sent home. Please keep in mind that ultimately it is the student's responsibility to find the time to complete the work that they missed when they were out.
If you are requesting work be put together so that you may pick it up, please e-mail me or leave me a message prior to the start of the school day so that I have time to put it together. Work may be picked up in the office after 1:00pm that day.
Behavior:
In the classroom, I use a variety of positive reinforcement techniques. From stickers to tickets to compliments and bucket filling slips, our classroom community is one in which making good choices are rewarded.
Pleae check your child's folder for Behavior Reflection Forms daily (please sign and return the next day) and for their Weekly Reflection Form on Fridays (please sign and return on Monday).
Communication:
During the day, messages can be left with our school secretaries or you can leave me a voicemail message by calling the school at (860) 945-4840.
You may also e-mail me at ahlgrenka@watertownps.org.
If there is a change in dismissal, please call the office instead of sending an e-mail. There are many times where I cannot check or access my e-mail during the course of the day due to meetings, special events, etc...
