CONTENT

MATH: place%20value.jpg Our first unit in Math will be Graphing and Data Analysis. Throughout the year we will be practicing our CMT skills daily. We will also spend a large part of the year working on Problem Solving Skills.

LANGUAGE ARTS

SPELLING: We will be utilizing a spelling menu every week where the student has the choice of what spelling activities he or she would like to complete that week.

READING: apple%20book.jpg Reading this year will consist of many different types of reading. We will be using both Storytown and Guided Reading in small groups. The students will be doing a great deal of independent reading and will be expected to always have an independent reading book to read at both home and school.

The students will be responding to the leveled readers, silent reading books, and chapter books in their response journals. We are also starting to use chapter books in our small groups later in the year.

In order to improve vocabulary we have started a new vocabulary program that is incorporated in the new reading series. The vocabulary is called robust vocabulary and the students are introduced to at least 6 words for each reading selection. Besides the activities presented in the reading series the students will be encouraged to recognize and use this robust vocabulary in their conversation, reading and writing. This will also be part of the classroom marble reward system

WRITING: Expository writing will be the focus of most fifth grade writing. We will be writing across all content areas not just during writing time. The students will be writing essays that will be scored and essays that they will revise, edit, and publish. These skill and strategies will be incorporated into a new writin program called Writer's Workshop.

SCIENCE: We will start the year working on problem solving skills and the lab report format using 3 cooperative learning activities. From there we will do a short unit on Dr. Ballard and the discovery of the Titanic wreck.
