Second Marking Period Curriculum...
Math:
Number Sense and Problem Solving
In math, students have been tackling numbers. They are currently working hard on place value, rounding, and comparing whole numbers and decimals. Next time you visit the grocery store, have your child estimate and compare prices of products.
Next, we will be reviewing the operations- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Don’t forget to encourage your child to study his/her class notes and multiplication facts daily.
Reading:
Reading Workshop
What do good readers do as they read? Throughout the year we will learn all about helpful reading strategies that will enable your child to become a stronger and more successful reader. Please encourage your child to read and state the main idea, recall facts and details, sequence events, summarize the story, recognize cause and effect relationships, compare and contrast information, make predictions, find word meaning in context, draw conclusions, make inferences, distinguish between fact and opinion, identify the author's purpose, interpret figurative language, and make connections.
Please encourage your child to read nightly for 25 minutes to expand their vocabulary and enhance their comprehension skills. They are currently reading and responding to a variety of genres independently and cooperatively during their reading workshop to practice applying their reading strategies.
Language:
Writing Workshop
Do you know what expository writing is? If not, ask your child to EXPLAIN it to you. In language arts, fifth graders will learn all about expository writing in preparation for the CMT which will be given next spring. Throughout the year we will focus on elaborating using the golden bricks and figurative language. Students will peer edit and revise their expository essays and add these to make them more descriptive. Students will also practice their grammar skills and learn all about sentence and paragraph structure and types.
The students will be busy bees investigating topics and creating Power Points.
Spelling: Click on the links below for the spelling lists by theme.
Social Studies:
Map Skills
What state is located at 42° North Latitude and 73° West Longitude? If you don’t know, ask your child to find the state on a map. This September in social studies, fifth graders will be studying map skills. They will learn how to read and describe different types of maps. Pull out your maps at home and study them with your child. Talk to your child about directions and the names of the streets in your neighborhood. Don’t forget to involve your child when you are planning your next road trip.
Science: (Check out Mrs. Sarandrea's webpage, too.)
Electricity & Magnetism
In science, students soon will be in and out of the Science lab conducting experiments. Science classes will be starting a unit on electricity and magnetism. Ask your child what requires electricity to work and research electricity at the library. Explore magnetism around the house using magnets.
