Welcome to Miss Carey's Corral!
Please visit this website often to learn more about what's going on with your cowpokes this month!

THE PONY EXPRESS:
Currently in the corral we are....
Reader's Workshop:
We will be continuing the school year with reader's workshop and using our reading strategies on picture books as well as students' independent chapter books and guided reading books.
Throughout the year we will be practicing various reading strategies and applying them to both authentic literature as well as our leveled Storytown readers.
At home, I am asking my parents to discuss with their students about their 25 minutes of reading each night. Allow your students to discuss with you a brief summary of what they are reading as well as getting into more specific details of the text. One thing your students will tell you is that I am going to be always asking them to describe further and why they think something. Through explaining their thought process they will be able to monitor their thinking and expand their comprehension.
Blogging:
Every week your students will be not only responding in their reader's notebook but will also be participating in an online blog that they will contributing to every week. They will also be responsible for responding to their classmates respsonses thoughtfully and participating in surveys based on their reading. Mr. Pflomm's class will also be participating and will allow the students to discuss even outside of the classroom.
Students will be asked both in school and out of school to participate in the blog. Please contact me if computer access at home will be difficult and we can make more time in the classroom or computer lab.
HIGH SCHOOL BLOGGING:

At least once this year we will be doing a read along with Watertown High School students where they will be reading the same book and discussing together both in literature circles once a week and also on the class blog along with Mr. Pflomm's 5th grade class. From the previous we have found students become excited about reading and discussing reading through this experience. We also found that blogging was a new way for students to interact with reading response.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me. Below is a link to the blog login. Students will be sent home with login information.

Writing:

This year our students will be embarking on Writer's Workshop where the students will be asked to participate in writing every day for at least a 45 minute period. They will be learning how to write narrative, personal essays, memoirs, poetry, fiction, non-fiction and expository texts. Students will be asked regularly to take their writing home and explore their own personal stories. Please encourage your student to explore memories, experiences and interests that they would be interested in writing about. Your students will be bringing home and decorating a personal writer's notebook in the first week and they should be encouraged to make it their own.
Spelling:
Your cowpokes will be taking a weekly spelling test starting week 2. They will be responsible for a weekly spelling menu that will be due every Thursday. Tests will be administered every Friday afternoon. I will work on getting all the spelling words and menu onto this site to allow access to them at all times.
The following website allows you to type in spelling words and use them to play games, test yourself and practice. I suggest any students who find spelling difficult to take the extra time to practice on this website.
Social Studies:
Our current social studies unit is on Explorers. We are discussing various European explorers and asking ourselves the big question, "What was their impact on history?".
Our project for this unit requires students to independently read and summarize articles and a video of a new explorer. They will then have to evaluate the explorer's impact on history. The students are asked to create and present a visual that explain their decision and why.
Below are links to the teachertube videos that the students will be asked to watch and also summarize. Students can watch the videos as many times as they'd like to summarize.
Overall, students need to use the articles as well as the video to evaluate and make a judgement on the explorer's impact on history.
Math:
Our units this marking period for math will be:
Measurement:
- Customary and Metric Length, Weight, Capacity.
- Area, Perimeter and Volume
Please encourage your children to measure at home and apply our math skills to the real world!
Probability
Throughout every marking period I will be giving regular multiplication assessments. Part of your students regular homework will be to practice their multiplcation tables. I have found that students that do not learn these and master them find the entire 5th grade math curriculum MUCH more difficult. If you need any resources or materials to help practice at home please let me know and I am happy to provide them.
Science:
Your students will be switching for Science with Mr. Pflomm this year. If you visit his website below, you will find many links to science games and resources that you may find helpful throughout the year.
If you are looking for online extra practice on the computer, go to the folllowing websites:
www.gamequarium.com Here you will find some fun games on multiplication and division as well as many other math topics.
www.funbrain.com Here you will find measurement game amongst many other math games to play.
www.multiplication.com Here you will find multiplication facts games.
******* If you happen to find any websites that your student finds helpful online for any subject area please share these with me and I'd love to share them on this site. This way everyone can benefit :) ********
I aim to create a classroom environment that all of my students will find to be not only supporting their learning but also their character. I believe in always smiling and laughing while learning. Learning should be fun and that is a creed that I live by. I hope that my students learn to love learning as much as I do.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I am always available to chat or schedule a time to meet. You can either email me at careyja@watertownps.org or call me at school (860) 945 - 4840 ext: 313. During school hours it will direct you to my voicemail however after school I will be readily available.
