STUDENT ACTIVITIES
An important phase of student life at the middle school is the student’s social development.
Throughout the year, school parties, picnics, dances, special assemblies, and class trips are scheduled.
These functions are a privilege and the school discipline code applies.
The eighth grade takes a trip to Washington, D. C. in the spring. This trip is a three-day educational tour of our nation’s capital. To attend this trip, behavior, attendance, tardiness, and academic grades are strongly considered.
ORGANIZATIONS YOU CAN BE SELECTED TO JOIN
An Honor Society, whose members are selected primarily on high academic achievement, is very active at Swift. To be considered for membership a student must make first honors for three consecutive trimesters in seventh and/or eighth grade. Beyond scholarship, inductees must also meet and maintain the standards of character, leadership, citizenship, and service that are stressed by the National Junior Honor Society. To continue membership in the Honor Society a student must achieve First Honors every subsequent trimester, be in good standing (behavior), and meet the criteria designed by the National Junior Honor Society. Ms. Buzzelli and Ms. A. Downey are the Honor Society advisors.
Peer Advocates are selected by faculty advisors and then trained in the Natural Helper Methods. They are trained to refer students with more serious issues. Peer Mediators are selected and trained to help students resolve conflicts through peaceful means within the school setting. They always work under the direction of a faculty advisor. Sixth Grade Peer Helpers have two goals. One of our goals is to serve our community through a variety of community service projects, and the other is to provide service to our school through promoting a positive school environment. Peer Helper advisors are Mrs. Sweetland, Mr. Russo, and Mrs. Baldwin.
Student Council is a unique group of students who possess strong leadership skills. This is a yearlong commitment that requires exceptional organizational and time management skills. Student Council is an excellent opportunity for students to develop teamwork, work habits, responsibility, and citizenship. Student Council meets on the second Monday of each month. Miss O'Leary and Miss Downey are the advisors of the Student Council.

Carolers is open to seventh grade chorus members who would like to sing at different events in Watertown and Oakville. They rehearse after school on a rotating basis. Mrs. Jedd is the Carolers' advisor.
Book Club is a group of young readers who meet once a month to discuss a book they have all read. Book Club members not only experience the book through the words in the book and conversations with others, but through activities that enrich book discussions and promote well-developed young adolescent reading habits.
Garden Club meets on an as needed basis and consists of those students who enjoy learning about gardening. The students work with Mrs. Gaulzetti and the women from the Watertown Garden Club to maintain the Swift courtyards throughout the year.
