WHS Academic Requirements

Freshman and Sophomores should carry a minimum courseload of 7 credits per year, Juniors should carry 6, and Seniors should carry 5.5.

The following conditions also apply:

1. Seventh or Eighth grade students who have successfully completed a course in French or Spanish will have that credit count toward the 23 credits.

2. Any student in grade 7 or 8 who takes and successfully completes Algebra I will have that credit count toward the 23 graduation credits and toward the mandated State mathematics requirement.

3. All students will be required to take and to pass 10th Grade Physical Education and thereby earn one credit  as mandated by State and the Board of Education. (There is an exception to this.) The law states: "Any student who presents a certificate from a physician, stating that in the opinion of the physician, participation in physical education is medically contraindicated because of the physical condition of such student, shall be excused from, the physical education requirement, provided the credit for physical education may be fulfilled by an elective. " (Section 10-221a)

4. Accounting will be considered a Mathematics credit.

6. Interdepartmental Publishing course will be considered 1 Vocational credit and 1/2 Computer credit

7. Tech Drawing/CAD 2 and Tech Drawing CAD/3 will be considered 1/2 Computer credit and 1/2 Vocational credit.

8. Graphic Arts 2 and 3 will be considered 1/2 Computer credit and 1/2 Vocational credit.

9. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has revised and updated its list of core courses that must be taken and passed to meet minimum initial eligibility requirements. Any student who may be interested in participating in a Division I or Division II college sports program should see his/her guidance counselor to plan a complete high school program that meets these requirements.  You can also find more information on the following websites...

Performance Standards Required for Graduation

Writing Performance Standard can be reached through either receiving a 4 or a 5 on the writing section of the CAPT test, through a writing portfolio that has been assembled through english classes, or through meeting the State average score on the Writing section of the SAT.

Math Performance Standard can be reached through either receiving a 4 or a 5 on a the math section of the CAPT test, through successfully completing our math standards graduation exam (Seniors who still need to satisfy this requirement should see their counselor), or through meeting the State average score on the Math section of the SAT.  

Technology Performance Standard can be reached through completing a technology related project or through the completion of certain classes.  Please see the program of studies for a listing of classes.

Citizenship/Community Service Performance Standard can be reached through completing 20 or more hours of community service.  Student can click here for a community service form or pick one up in the counseling office.
