Watertown High's robotics team launched space engineer's career

WATERTOWN — He has already worked on a Mars rover, and he plans on spending next summer helping program the first commercial space shuttle to enter the Earth's orbit.

But years before working at the cutting edge of space exploration, 20-year-old Watertown High School graduate Michael Sorrenti says he learned the basics building and programing robots each winter with the school's Robotics Team.

Sorrenti, who is currently a junior at the Florida Institute of Technology majoring in computer engineering, was recently awarded an internship with SpaceX, a private space transportation company in Hawthorne, Calif. His resume already includes internships at Kennedy Space Center and NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.

When reached on the telephone earlier this week, Sorrenti said he would never have gotten where he is today without his experience on the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, or FIRST, Robotics Team 237.
