Sad News from Swift

It is with deep regret that we inform you about a loss to our school community on July 17th regarding a recent graduate of Swift Middle School.

Dear Swift Families,

It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community. On July 17th, Tyler Palmer died in an ATV accident. Tyler graduated from Swift last month and was excited to attend Nonnewaug High School in the fall. This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school, especially our students.

I have been in close contact with Dr. Harrison to ensure Watertown’s Crisis Intervention Team is available to students. The Crisis Intervention Team is made up of a professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this. Counseling will be available for Swift students today and tomorrow.  Students can come to Swift Middle School with their parent or guardian at one of the following times:

  • Thursday, July 18th between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM,
  • Thursday, July 18th between  6:00 PM and 7:00 PM,
  • Friday, July 19th between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM.

A parent or guardian must remain at the school while their child speaks with a counselor.  Counselors will also be available to speak with parents or guardians during these times.  Please click this link for information about speaking to your child about grief.

We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child as you need.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Palmer family.

Sincerely,

Marylu T. Lerz, Principal
