As we enter November, we recognize that some members of our community may be facing financial hardship. Whether due to furloughs from the ongoing federal government shutdown or changes to SNAP benefits, we understand that these circumstances can create challenges, including food insecurity for some families.
Please know that the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Program continues without interruption. Students who qualify for this program also receive breakfast, and these services remain fully funded and available to all who participate. Families can apply for benefits at any time throughout the school year. Families that experience either a permanent or temporary loss of income, including those currently not receiving wages, are urged to apply OR re-apply for free or reduced-price meal status.
Families are encouraged to apply online at www.myschoolapps.com, or you may contact our Food Services Department to request a paper application. Please call (860) 945-4819 or email geiseje@watertownps.org.
During this time, we want to ensure that all families have access to the resources they need. The Town of Watertown offers several food assistance options, including the Watertown Food Bank (by appointment) and community meal programs coordinated through local churches and civic organizations. Families in need of support can contact the Watertown Social Services Office at (860) 945-5252 or visit the town website for more information.
We also encourage you to connect with 2-1-1, a free and confidential service that links individuals and families to local food assistance programs and other community resources. Call 2-1-1 or visit www.211.org to find nearby food pantries, meal programs, and other essential services available in our area.
Finally, we would like to share that we are beginning to develop Care Closets at our schools. WPS Care Closets will be special spaces in our schools, open to everyone in our community, to provide essential items for students and families in need. The closets will be stocked with non-perishable food items and hygiene products.
Please click here for more information on how you can help support the Care Closets initiative and ensure all of our Watertown students are able to focus on learning.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is any way we can support you.
