🎥 Watch the video to see extension in action in Ms. Guerrera’s classroom.
This year at Watertown High School, we took an important step forward by intentionally building extension into our daily schedule to better meet the needs of all learners.
What is extension?
Extension provides students who have demonstrated understanding of the core learning with opportunities to go deeper. Instead of more of the same work, students engage in higher-level thinking, problem solving, and application tasks that stretch their learning.
What is new this year?
As part of our continued work around the Warrior Way and strong instructional practices, WHS embedded dedicated extension time into our schedule. This allows teachers to:
Provide targeted support for students who need more time with core concepts
Offer meaningful extension opportunities for students ready to move ahead
Differentiate instruction within the same class period
Keep all students actively engaged in productive learning
This shift has helped make our classrooms more responsive and student-centered.
Extension in Ms. Lisa Guerrera’s Math Class
Ms. Guerrera is doing a great job bringing this work to life. During extension time, she thoughtfully:
✔ Supports students who are still developing mastery
✔ Provides deeper, more challenging math tasks for advanced learners
✔ Keeps the focus on critical thinking and meaningful problem solving
The result is a classroom where every student is appropriately challenged and supported.
